Tax Information

Property taxes are required to fund City services. The millage rates are levied on your taxable value.The millage rates are established annually so as to provide sufficient funding to support the level of service, programs and projects approved in the annual budget. The left navigation topics will help you find more information.

Taxes are mailed by July 1st for the summer and December 1st for the winter. Taxes are due September 14th for the summer and February 14th for the winter. Penalties are not waived for late payments, the due date is the due date regardless if it is a Friday, weekend or holiday.If City Hall is closed use the dropbox to the left of the front door or pay online. Postmarks are NOT counted as the payment date.Payment must be physically received in City Hall by the due date.  Make sure if paying through your bank to allow sufficient mailing time.  Your check date doesn't account as the paid date.

All taxes paid after September 14, there shall be added a two (2) percent penalty together with interest at a rate of one-half (1/2) of one (1) percent for each month or fraction of a month intervening between the first day of July and the date of payment. Any tax payers eligible for deferment of summer property taxes shall file their intent to defer with the City Treasurer by September 14.

How can I pay my taxes safely and contact free?

Mail your taxes in. Please write your phone number on your check or the tax payment stub so we can contact you if there is a problem with your payment. 

Drop your payment in the drop box at the entrance to City Hall.

Pay online at www.cityofsylvanlake.org. On the homepage, click on the “I want to” Pay online, Taxes.  You can search by name, address or parcel number.  The current amount owed, and payment history can also be viewed online.

Please note: There is a convenience fee for these 3rd party payment services.  E-Check is a flat $3.00 Credit Card is based on the payment amount.

RETURN YOUR WHOLE TAX BILL WITH YOUR PAYMENT WHEN PAYING BY MAIL OR DROPBOX.  ENCLOSE A SELF ADDRESSED, STAMPED ENVELOPE AND A RECEIPT WILL BE SENT BACK TO YOU.   YOU CAN ALSO CHECK YOUR PAYMENT STATUS ONLINE USING OUR WEBSITE.  Please allow 24 hours for processing.

Winter Taxes shall be due and payable December thru February 14, at City Hall. Starting February 15, a 3% penalty applies.

Starting March 1st taxes must be paid to the Oakland County Treasurer. If you are paying during the month of March, you must first stop in at City Hall to get a revised statement form to submit with your payment.
